THE Hitchin
Thespians will be performing Jekyll and Hyde: The Musical
at the Gordon Craig Theatre in Stevenage.
The plot explores the fine line between good and evil as Dr
Jekyll’s misguided experiments lead to the creation of the
despicable Mr Hyde.
The duality of his character creates an intriguing love
triangle and a series of murders as Mr Hyde wreaks revenge
on those who have spurned him as Dr Jekyll.
The leading role is played by Tom Evans, head teacher at
Martins Wood Primary School in Stevenage and the show
includes classic songs such as This is The Moment and
Someone Like You.
This dramatic, pulse-pounding show will be performed on an
open stage with haunting, atmospheric lighting and sound
effects adding to the tension and drama.
The show starts at 7.45pm and will be performed from October
3 to October 7.
AS
a headteacher, Tom Evans has had to deal with some terrors
in his time — experience he can fall back on for his latest
role with Hitchin Thespians!
The company is one of the first in the UK to perform Jekyll
and Hyde: The Musical — a dramatic new work soon to be made
into a Hollywood movie
— and Tom plays the dual leading role of good Dr Henry
Jekyll and evil Edward Hyde. The Martins Wood Primary School
head says: "I’ve been fortunate to play a few leading roles
in my time, but this is definitely my greatest challenge to
date.
"Fellow headteachers have joked that it sounds like any
normal day at work!" The plot explores the fine line between
good and evil, centring around Doctor Jekyll's
well-intentioned but misguided experiments which lead to the
creation of the despicable Mr Hyde.
The duality of his character creates an intriguing love
triangle and a series of murders whereby Hyde wreaks revenge
on those who have spurned him as Jekyll. The show, which
opens at Stevenage’s Gordon Craig Theatre on Tuesday,
features new costumes with haunting, atmospheric lighting
and sound effects adding to the tension and drama.

A Stevenage
headmaster took on the leading role in one of the first UK
productions of a dramatic new musical. Martins Wood Primary
School head Tom Evans played the dual roles of Dr Henry
Jekyll and evil Edward Hyde in Jekyll and Hide: The Musical,
staged by Hitchin Thespians at the Gordon Craig Theatre,
Stevenage.
The show, which closed yesterday following a five night run,
produced good ticket sales and a lively atmosphere among
audiences.
"By the usual standards, the audiences have been extremely
good and that has helped Tom to sing out of his skin," said
producer Paul Adams. "We’re very pleased with the way the
whole cast have sang." Most of the costumes were new and the
show was performed on an open stage with haunting,
atmospheric lighting and sound effects adding to the drama.
It is the third production put on this year by the thespians
after The Full Monty and Thoroughly Modern Millie.
