Taking part in a production is a lot of fun – and a lot of work (we’re not going to lie: it takes dedication and lots of rehearsal to get a show on the stage!).  

Rehearsals take place on at least one night a week, sometimes more (depending on what part you’re playing), and you’ll need to learn lines and choreography and practise them at home.  

Don’t be dismayed! The sheer thrill and adrenaline rush of taking part in a live production absolutely makes up for the months of work that goes into each show.

How can I join Hitchin Thespians?

We are always delighted to hear from prospective new members.  

Membership of Hitchin Thespians costs £35 a year (£20 for our Young Thespians). If you want to take part in our productions, social activities and workshops, you’ll need to be a member of the Society.  

Being a member has lots of advantages (in addition to the buzz of performing): 

• Access to our Members Only areas on our website and Facebook page; 
• The opportunity to vote at our AGM; 
• The chance to take part in our social activities and workshops; 
• Options to be part of the Committee, and actively engage in running the Society;
• And lots more!

We’ll get in touch to invite you along to a couple of rehearsals, and you can get a feel for the Society, how we rehearse and so on.  

We’ll check where your voice range lies, and give you a rehearsal buddy, who’ll take you under their wing and show you the ropes.  

After this trial period, you’ll need to fill in our Membership Form and pay your membership fee. Then you’ll be ready to take part in productions, learn some backstage skills and enjoy all the aspects of the Society.  

If I’m a member, do I automatically get a part in the next production?

Hitchin Thespians don’t have a joining audition: we welcome everyone who wants to join us. And every member is invited to join the chorus for every production.  

However, if you want to take on a Principal Role or solo part in a production, you will need to audition for that part.  

I’ve heard auditions are really scary!

Our audition process is simple and friendly.  

The Musical Director (MD) for the production will provide the audition pieces several weeks in advance of the audition date. Anyone interested in the Principal Roles will have the chance to go through the pieces with the MD. 

 Our auditions are usually “open auditions,” which means that other members of the cast or wider society are welcome to come and observe the auditions. However, you’ll be focusing on the Audition Panel (usually the MD, Director and an external guest panellist) who will listen to all the auditions performed and then assign the roles.  

How do rehearsals fit around work commitments?

Hitchin Thespians is an amateur society, and most of us have commitments outside the society.  

Our rehearsals are as flexible as we can make them. We start rehearsals at 7.30pm, and aim to finish between 10pm and 10.30pm, with at least one break in the middle.  

The rehearsal schedule is released at the start of every production, and you can let the Production Manager know if you aren’t available for some of the rehearsal dates.  

Rehearsals do tend to intensify nearer to show week, and there is an expectation that you will attend “Get-In” (where the performance space is physically set up), plus one or more Tech and Dress Rehearsals in the evenings immediately prior to the show dates.  

All attendance expectations will be fully laid out in the rehearsal schedule, and the Production Manager will be on hand to advise.
